As sister African American feminists, Carol Moseley Braun and Donna Marie Jackson were really hitting it off, and Carol was completely warmed up by the time we got to our final service at the Canaan Missionary Baptist Church in Urbana, twin city to Champaign. The Reverend B. J. Tatum had already launched into his sermon, and a rousing one it was. Reverend Tatum took as his theme the journeys of Paul, and the qualities the preacher expanded upon were determination and dedication. A man who obviously loved the language, the preacher punctuated his declarations with the cry, “Do I have a witness here?”

Reverend Tatum most certainly did, chief among them, Carol Moseley Braun. I glanced at the candidate, who was sitting beside me, content to wait her turn. I thought: Bring on the picnickers, the fairgoers, the outstretched hands, and the redundant questions. This day was not yet half over, but the rest of it was going to be fine.

Carol approached the front of the overflowing church to warm applause. As she took her place below the pulpit, she drew a big breath, smiled, and said, “Reverend Tatum, you were preaching to me. I am, indeed, on a journey. Dedication and determination?” She laughed, then shook her head slightly and sighed, “Yes, I was meant to be here.”
